Approx 40km from Santa Anna with the last 4km a rough dirt track

Volcan Cerro Verde

approx 40 mins ride up around the lake on a lovely if potholed surface is the start of some volcano walks
Cerro Verde is closed due to recent activity
so with armed escort we drop down from the road, maybe 500m, and then begin the ascent up the rocky & dusty Izalco volcanoe.
Izalco : recent activity began in the 17th century as a sulphurous smoke vent, but in Feb 1770 violent eruptions formed a cone
which was in more or less constant activity until 1957.
It was known as the Lighthouse of the Pacific due to the regularity of fiery explosions
Since 1966 it has been quiescient.
A joven is the only one to beat us to the top ... turns out he's the guide :)

Gettin just a bit too hot
