Approx 40km from Santa Anna with the last 4km a rough dirt track
approx 40 mins ride up around the lake on a lovely if potholed surface is the start of some volcano walks |
Cerro Verde is closed due to recent activity |
|
so with armed escort we drop down from the road, maybe 500m, and then begin the ascent up the rocky & dusty Izalco volcanoe. |
||
Izalco : recent activity began in the 17th century as a sulphurous smoke vent, but in Feb 1770 violent eruptions formed a cone |
which was in more or less constant activity until 1957. It was known as the Lighthouse of the Pacific due to the regularity of fiery explosions |
Since 1966 it has been quiescient. |
A joven is the only one to beat us to the top ... turns out he's the guide :) |
