Perquin was a rebel stronghold & the scene of one of the last and largest battles ... there were several rebel groups in El Salvador and not necessarily representative of all the people, although

On the Pan Am, Iguana on a rope (look carefully)
riding an unothodox route cross country saw friendly people, little fiestas & potholed roads, and worth it to reach this town which was such an important place in the revolution

over 1200 people were
slaughtered by the military near Perquin; exhumation counted 80% as children

This church saw a big battle between rebels & military forces ...

A good film to watch (we did whilst here) is : Salvador (1986), find a synopsis of this Oliver Stone film here : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091886/ and here : http://www.oscarworld.net/ostone/default.asp?PageId=9

Whilst Boyle is for real, the character John Cassady is loosely based on John Hoagland; some of Hoagland's photos http://www.thedagger.com/archive/elsal/index.html
including a sequence where John photographed his own murderers

Note that there are unsavoury scenes in the film & pictures

We indulge in a hot water hotel ...
chillin out & drinkin beer is good for musing on the big Why ...
