Trip to Lamanai, large Mayan site near Orange Walk |
This river, called 'New River' by the Spanish conquistadors as they couldn't pronounce the Mayan word, flows from the highlands of Guatemala past Tikal and was used for trade between the sites |
A Mayan site Lamanai (originally Laman Ayin aka submerged crocodile) was still populated as late as the early 1900s ... possibly due to the presence of a river & lake for irrigation |
The Spanish found 730 temples at Lamanai, and the head honcho at the time vowed to build a church for every one ... 5 were built, that's builders for you ! ;) |
