There's a stretch of the Pan Am which is unsurfaced & resembles the moon more than a highway ...
we got lashed on whilst negotiating this rocky, muddy, moonscape being buzzed by HGVs
We took refuge in the first hotel after 90 mins of freezin cold rain at 3000m, but no heating or water & a bag of crisps for tea :)
Cuenca is pretty & a welcome sight
